Introducing Murray Eichler - Senior Lab Technician

"I’ve been with Hill Labs for almost 24 years now, ever since I joined as a lab technician in the environmental organics section back in July 2000. My journey to Hill Labs was influenced by my upbringing on a dairy farm and my interest in science. After completing a science course at Wintec, I found my way to Hill Labs and I’ve stayed here all this time thanks mainly to the variety of the work that we get to do.

Progressing to a senior technician role and taking on the responsibility of training new team members has been a particularly fulfilling part of my job. Seeing others develop and contribute to the team's success is something that I find really rewarding. But really, we take a lot of pride in being able to work to a high standard. When you first come into the job you learn how to do it thoroughly, then you learn how to add speed and efficiency to it - that’s where my job satisfaction comes from.

One of the aspects I appreciate most about working at Hill Labs is the sense of community we have. Coming from a farming background, the transition to a bustling lab environment was a welcome change. I also love the initiatives such as the 'Harvest Table' in the staff room, where we share homegrown produce with each other.

Over my nearly 24 years at Hill Labs, I've witnessed many changes, such as our move from Clyde Street to Duke Street, which gave us a larger, more accommodating workspace. There have also been advancements in equipment which have enabled us to handle a higher volume of samples more efficiently. Our team structure has also seen more defined roles over the years and improved our ways of prioritising jobs. For us that’s meant smoother operations and enhanced productivity, and for customers that’s meant faster service.

It's exciting to be here for the 40th anniversary milestone. I’m looking forward to hearing from the leadership team on how the company is doing, what we’ve got to look forward to and what we have to celebrate. Being included in the company celebrations definitely makes you feel like a valued member of the team and that you’re able to share in the company’s success.”

“Come October this year, I’ve been with Hill Labs for 30 years. Personally, there are so many stand out moments during my career but one of the most significant has been the opportunity to help grow the organics section in the lab, being part of the clean-up of the old Fruitgrowers’ Chemical Company DDT plant in Mapua, and helping to grow the methamphetamine testing service which grew from nothing to being a very significant contributor to our business at one stage."
