We were delighted to welcome young journalist Kadie and the Kea Kids News team to our Hamilton lab, where they burrowed into the fascinating world of soil health. Kadie, a Waikato primary school student, is part of Kea Kids News which produces news videos for kids, by kids.
As part of the report, Kadie learned about our new Earthworm eDNA test, a first in the New Zealand market. The test can determine the presence of earthworms in soil, an indication of good soil health. During the visit, Kadie interviewed Managing Director Dr Jonno Hill, who explained how the test works and the importance of understanding the vitality of soil. Kadie’s report included a hands-on approach in the lab, seeing the testing in action and taking part in the process herself.
Soil is a vital natural resource that underpins productive agriculture and horticulture operations. As awareness of soil quality grows among farmers and consumers alike, the need for effective testing methods has become increasingly critical. Soil health is determined by a mix of physical, chemical, and biological factors, all of which play a role in its productivity.
Earthworms are essential to healthy soil ecosystems. A robust population of these creatures is often a sign of good soil health. However, traditional methods for assessing earthworm populations can be time-consuming, involving the manual collection and analysis of soil samples in the field. This is where Hill Labs’ Earthworm eDNA test comes in, offering a modern and efficient solution.
The Earthworm eDNA test is available both as a standalone service and as an add-on to existing soil testing options. This new offering enriches our growing portfolio of soil health assessments, providing valuable insights into the biological aspects of soil supporting more sustainable agricultural practices.
