Staff Profile: Empowering Growth Across Hill Labs - Sam McVicker

Name: Sam McVicker
Role: Learning and Development Advisor
Length of service at Hill Labs: Eight and a half years

Tell us a bit about yourself

I am originally from Whakatane, and I moved to Hamilton over 11 years ago to complete my degree at the University of Waikato. I’ve worked in four different sections within Hill Labs which has allowed me to connect and build relationships with people all over the business. Outside of work, I enjoy travelling to new places and reading books to recharge.

How did you end up at Hill Labs?

I applied for a three-month fixed term role for my final work placement paper in the Bachelor of Science (Technology) degree. After applying, I was informed that the role had become a permanent role. I’ve been here ever since!

What does your position involve?

Most of my role is managing, scheduling, preparing and facilitating in-person workshops, and creating online learning modules for all Hill Labs’ sites. We currently offer over 30 in-person workshops and over 15 online modules, with further workshops and modules created each year. Other aspects of my role include recruitment support, business partnering with other sections of the company and ensuring L&D training events are updated and maintained.

What does a typical day look like in your role?

I love the variation in my role, as each day can bring new challenges and opportunities. A typical day for me could include workshop scheduling and / or facilitation, creating online content, updating / improving existing learning content and resources, and helping anyone that walks into (or calls) the HR Support office.

What other roles have you been in at Hill Labs?

I started in the Agricultural Sample Reception team as a Laboratory Technician for a year and a half before moving into the Waters Microbiology team as a Team Leader for a 12-month secondment. After the secondment finished, I became the Urgent Waters Team Leader for five years before settling into my current L&D role for the past year.

What do you enjoy most about working at Hill Labs?

The people! Hill Labs has such a friendly and family-based culture where everyone can strike up a conversation with anyone (including our CEO). I work alongside a fantastic group of people who make you feel valued and respected.

What is the highlight in your career at Hill Labs?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been the positive change I’ve helped bring to each team I’ve worked with. Seeing the initiatives I’ve introduced continue to thrive long after I’ve moved on is incredibly fulfilling. It’s a reminder that the work we do can have a lasting impact.
