With a wealth of expertise and agility in a fast-paced industry, the Wellington Hill Labs team plays a pivotal part in servicing the region with their main services of asbestos and mould testing.
Team leader Zandra Fenton says their expertise and commitment to quality allow them to consistently meet tight turnaround times and respond quickly to urgent requests.
With the setup of the Wellington lab, clients often see analysts at work. Zandra says walk-in clients are surprised by how hands-on the process is.
“We are the instrument. The way that our analysis is performed is solely reliant on us and what we see down the microscope. I think it is quite unique compared to other forms of testing around the business where instrumentation can be used to produce a test result.”
This includes clearance work, where timing is critical. In some cases, results are needed within an hour to ensure a site can be safely reoccupied. Training new staff takes time, given the level of judgement and problem solving involved.
From Asbestos to Mould: Broadening Our Capabilities
While the team is best known for asbestos testing in building materials, filters, and clearance samples like tapes and swabs, they also serve as a drop off point for environmental samples. These are registered and packed on site before being sent to other Hill Labs locations for analysis.
Over the last five years, the team has grown from two analysts to four, expanding their capabilities to meet industry demand. The recent launch of mould testing has been a welcome addition for customers to the site’s services, marking a new chapter for the team.
“It’s really exciting because we've been solely focused on asbestos for the entire time that I've been here. It’s a great opportunity for our analysts to pick up something new and gain a fresh skillset.”
