PFAS Analysis for Soil, Groundwater, Surface water and Potable Water

We are excited to announce the addition of in-house PFAS analysis to our extensive range of environmental soil and water testing services, addressing the increasing demand for this analysis across New Zealand.

PFAS is a large group of emerging contaminants found globally, often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’ due to their persistence in the environment. They are also known for their potential health risk, including developmental effects and certain types of cancers.

PFAS has been widely used in various consumer goods and industrial products since the 1950s, and is found in many household products, including waterproof clothes and anti-staining products for fabrics and carpets.  The most well-known compounds are perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS), and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA).

Sites contaminated with PFAS compounds have been identified in New Zealand over recent years, and Maximum Allowable Values (MAV’s) for PFHxS + PFOS and PFOA are included in the Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand, 2022. PFAS analysis is becoming more commonly requested as part of consent monitoring and site investigations.

Our new service is:

  • Fast - our routine turnaround for PFAS analysis for Soil, Groundwater, Surface Water and Potable Waters is 5 working days following the day of receipt at our Hamilton laboratory.
  • Reliable - we use a combination of certified products, batch testing, rinsing and stringent lab procedures to ensure quality, reliable results. Our reporting limits meet the NEMP 2.0 guidelines, Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand and the 95% ANZECC guideline.
  • Easy - for soils, our sample kits come with everything you need to sample, including two 125 mL containers per sample location. Our water method requires only two 5 mL samples to be provided per sample location. The smaller sample volume required makes sample collection quicker and easier, and general sample handling, such as packing and sending, is also improved due to the container’s reduced size and weight.

Our PFAS Technical Note, which includes Reporting Limits and our full PFAS compound list, along with our PFAS Sampling Guide can be found here
