Hill News November 2023 - Update From Our CEO, Dr Jonno Hill

The cliché “change is the only constant” is as true now as it’s ever been. Within our changing climate, we have apparently just kicked over from La Nina to El Nino, which is likely to lead to more rain on the west coast and more drought on the east. Hats off to our farmers, who must do the best they can within unpredictable and sometimes severe weather events.

It looks like we will have a new government for the next three years (though at the time of writing this is still undecided), and our population growth has increased dramatically over the last year, so there will also be changes around infrastructure and land development projects that will impact many of us.

The AI revolution is also now in full swing and moving at a dizzying pace, with significant disruptions, both good and bad, almost guaranteed across a wide range of industries. One of the impacts that we are most excited about here at Hill Labs is the potential for AI tools to help accelerate software development, which is still a famously expensive undertaking.

While, here at Hill Labs, our ‘bread and butter’ is high-volume routine analyses, in such a changeable world things rarely feel perfectly routine. One of our fundamental strategies is to play the long game by constantly investing into our core operations – our people, equipment and facilities – so that we can reliably deliver on our service promises, and also be poised to respond when our customers need us to help with something out of the ordinary. We therefore maintain a strong lab-based R&D team of around 30 people, and considerable digital capability with around 40 staff across our software, infrastructure and data science teams.

This ongoing investment allows us to continually refine and improve the way we do things, as well as respond to evolving customer needs and one-off serious events. We have a current suite of projects that will see us delivering new projects next year, as well as improvements to our existing services, which we look forward to releasing.

On that note, please tell us if you need anything new from us, or would like to see us doing anything differently. We enjoy exploring new possibilities and chasing down the best opportunities for improvement and growth. In this changing world we know that the needs of many of our customers will also be changing, and that there will always be new opportunities for us to do things differently and better. Our ongoing success relies on our ability to understand and respond to these opportunities effectively, so please do talk to us about how we can best support you in your changing environment.
